The reasons for such a radical form of treatment are huge. And the same question - nutrition after bowel surgery - is facing all patients.
3 periods of nutrition
The first period lasts two to three days immediately after surgery. Diet these days is the strictest.
The second period is from the 4th to the 5-7th day after surgery. The duration of this period depends on the recovery process of the patient.
The third period is from the 7th to the 30-40th day after the operation. The largest and most insidious, because I want everything already, but everything is not yet possible.
Prohibited foods after bowel surgery
- Fresh baked goods, especially muffin.
- Fatty meats.
- Dishes containing a large amount of salt and spices, as well as all types of smoked foods.
- Raw milk (homemade), fatty dairy and sour-milk products, cheese.
- Crumbly and bean cereals, pasta.
- Vegetables, including raw ones (especially for cabbage, tomatoes, asparagus).
- Mushrooms.
- Nuts.
- Fatty soups. Cold, dairy and bean soups.
- Cocoa, coffee, grape juice, carbonated and chilled drinks.
First period
Diet after bowel surgery is subject to strict rules.
This period is the most difficult for the patient. Food these days should maximize the gastrointestinal tract. This is done for several reasons:
- Reduce intestinal locomotor activity, because when digesting solid and fatty foods, the intestines move actively.
- Decreased secretory function. Bile and enzymes can dissolve suture that is placed on the intestines. If dissolution of the joints occurs, then peritonitis will begin. And this condition is dangerous for the patient’s life, and the duration of the recovery process increases several times. But the mucous tissues of a person heal quite quickly. Therefore, after 3-4 days in case of good health, a relaxation of the diet is allowed.
All food these days should be liquid or jelly-like, warm, not salty, and no more than one glass at a time. You need to eat 7-8 times a day.
On the first day, as a rule, the patient is in intensive care under the gaze of doctors. In the first 10-12 hours he should not eat or drink anything at all. But basically the patients themselves have no appetite - everything hurts and you want to sleep after anesthesia. So it seems to the patient himself.
However, there is another explanation for this. Doctors during and after surgery inject intravenous infusion solutions that nourish the body. Thanks to these solutions, the patient does not experience hunger in the first hours.
After 10-12 hours, the patient is only allowed to drink the liquid. The patient’s diet includes various stewed fruit, decoctions and vegetable broths. Meat broth is allowed, but only half. The total volume of liquid should be at least 2 liters. By the end of the first day you can eat fruit jelly.
On the second day after surgery, a variety of fluids can be added to the patient’s diet. Introduced meat low-fat broth, you can chicken. Fruit jellies and natural juices pleasantly diversify the menu after bowel surgery. It is allowed to add oil to the meat and rice broth (if you have not been fixed with rice before).
Starting from the third day, the diet after surgery on the intestine allows you to walk up - with normal health - to liquid (mashed) cereals, meat and fish soufflé, one soft-boiled egg.
By this time, the patient has a brutal appetite. But you need to restrain him. The diet is not much different from the previous day. You can add low-fat cream, and reduce the frequency of food intake up to 6 times a day.
With dairy products, you must be careful. If the patient had previously observed milk intolerance, even in deep childhood, then now is not the time for experiments. Sour-milk products can provoke an undesirable effect. For example, kefir with high fat content or milk can cause flatulence, fermented baked milk in some people provokes constipation. Cheese sometimes fixes. All these phenomena are very undesirable. But if previously the patient did not observe an inadequate reaction to sour-milk and dairy products, then after the operation he can safely drink them.
If, when expanding the diet, the patient develops pain, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, diarrhea or constipation, then you should return to the previous menu.
Second period
With a good course of the postoperative period for 3-4 days, the patient is transferred to a general ward. Diet after bowel surgery should still be gentle to the intestines. But it is already more diverse, and a gradual load on the intestines with more solid food begins.
The following cereals are allowed: wheat, rye, oat, rice, semolina. Of these, you can prepare mucous porridge in the water. You can also cook with these cereals mucous soups on meat broth. To diversify the menu with fish and meat souffles, steam protein omelettes. You can also enjoy sweet mousses and low-fat dairy products.
But if the patient's health is unsatisfactory, then the nutrition after surgery on the intestine until the onset of improvement remains the same. Also at this time, doctors are expecting an independent stool from the patient.
Third period
In the normal course of the disease, on the 7-10th day after the operation, the patient is discharged from the hospital.
It would seem that the end to all diets. But no ... Diet should be observed for at least another 2-3 weeks.
The diet after bowel surgery in this period is as follows. Preference should be given to steamed dishes. The fat content of broths and other first courses is low. Be careful with vegetables and fruits, which can cause excessive gas formation! You can safely enter all dairy products from the 14th day after the operation. And most importantly, the chair should be regular, and the act of defecation easy.
Recipes after bowel surgery
Slimy soup
Unfortunately, not many hostesses know how to cook it. And it doesn’t sound delicious, but having cooked according to this recipe, you will become a fan of this dish. Pour 2-3 tablespoons of oatmeal into boiling water (1 liter). Cook until the flakes are completely dissolved, about 1 hour. Then filter, but do not wipe.
In the first period after the operation, salt and eat a little. In the second period after surgery, you can add an egg-milk mixture. And in the third period, you can add a little potato, grated carrots and boil again. Then wipe through a sieve - and the already more delicious mucous soup is ready.
Meat or fish souffle
For cooking, 100 grams of minced meat is required. In our case, it should be minced meat from lean meats or fish. One yolk of chicken egg, 20-30 ml of milk and a teaspoon of semolina. Mix everything, add egg white.
Put the resulting mixture on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 15-30 minutes until cooked. You can also cook in a double boiler.
Bon appetit and a speedy recovery!
