Intel Comet Lake: a little 14 nm in the tenth generation

According to the strategy of launching Intel processors on the market already in recent years, the next tenth generation includes several heterogeneous groups: along with the already presented 10-nm Intel Ice Lake , the 14-nm Comet Lake will also live here in their various forms . In late August, the official announcement of the Comet Lake mobile line for portable devices took place.

Mobile Comet Lake on the Legacy rights received model indexes of the "old model", not the same as those used in Ice Lake. In general, the picture is as follows (clickable so that you can read the small text).

Unlike Ice Lake, Comet Lake uses 9+ generation graphics cores - they debuted in 2017 at Kaby Lake. Core i3 has 23 actuators, the rest - 24, their operating frequency is 1.0-1.1 GHz. Other main characteristics are given in the table.

Comet lake Baz. frequency Max. frequency Cores / threads Cache TDP, W
Core i7-10710U 1.1 GHz 4.7 GHz 6/12 12 Mb 15/25
Core i7-10510U 1.8 GHz 4.9 GHz 4/8 8 Mb 15/25
Core i5-10210U 1.6 GHz 4.2 GHz 4/8 6 Mb 15/25
Core i3-10110U 2.1 GHz 4.1 GHz 2/4 4 Mb 15/25
Compare the characteristics with those that we have already seen in Ice Lake.

Ice lake Baz. frequency Max. frequency Cores / threads Cache TDP
Core i7-1065G7 1.3 GHz 3.9 GHz 4/8 8 Mb 15/25
Core i5-1035G7 1.2 GHz 3.7 GHz 4/8 6 Mb 15/25
Core i5-1035G4 1.1 GHz 3.7 GHz 4/8 6 Mb 15/25
Core i5-1035G1 1.0 GHz 3.6 GHz 4/8 6 Mb 15/25
Core i3-1005G1 1.2 GHz 3.4 GHz 2/4 4 Mb 15/25
As you can see, the new old line has a higher maximum frequency, more cores and a cache at maximum. Everything else is confusingly similar, including names, which will add intrigue to the selection process. Anandtech website experts compared the two ranges from a consumer point of view, and that’s what they did. The conditional winner in the nomination is marked in bold.

In terms of security, Comet Lake received exactly the same set of patches as Ice Lake. Again, the resemblance is rare.

Description Name Patch
Bound check bypass Specter V1 Soft
Branch target injection Specter V2 Hardware + OS
Rogue Data Cache Load V3 Hardware
Rogue System Register Read V3a MCU
Speculative Store Bypass V4 Hardware + OS
Level 1 Terminal Fault Foreshadow Hardware
uArch Fill Buffer Data Sampling RIDL Hardware
uArch Store Buffer Data Sampling Fallout Hardware
uArch Load Port Data Sampling - Hardware
uArch Data Sampling Uncachable Memory - Hardware
The list of Comet Lake interfaces is shown in the figure. Compared with the predecessors of the ninth generation, we note the integrated Wi-Fi 6 controller (AX201), as well as support for DDR4-2666 and LPDDR4X-2933 memory.

New processors will appear on sale this quarter.
