Wooden toys, part two - 1986-1988

Continuing memories of wooden toys . I started playing on computers somewhere around 1988-1989. The first few years were at work with the parents of friends, and then computers began to appear at home as well. However, mine appeared relatively late, sometime in 1997. Therefore, until that moment, games that required a lot of time were rarely available to me. Not, of course, there were gaming sessions for several hours, but I did not have the opportunity to sit quietly in the evening behind some ultima at the current time. Then he made up for something, due to the fact that his computer was 486-33 and the games that were relevant at that time were not going very well on it. Therefore, he was engaged in the fact that he woolen old collections in search of something interesting or missing in early childhood.

Okay, let's continue.

1986

Karateka

Fighting on the background of Fuji. I played dandy in it - Fuji was not there, but the colors were more fun than the CGA.

But it is impossible not to mention.

Livingstone Supongo (Livingstone, I Presume?)

Dr. Livingston's search in the jungle of Africa. Quite an interesting platformer, focused more on solving puzzles than on action. Several types of weapons with different physics and quite leisurely enemies.

Space Quest I: Roger Wilco in the Sarien Encounter

The first part of the adventures of space cleaner Roger Wilco. Dawn of the golden age of Sierra Online quests. Well, one of the toys that made me learn English. Moving from the keyboard, but all actions - by entering text commands. Later, the VGA version came out with pure mouse control, but it was all very much later.

Starflight

And this is a clear progenitor of the second Star Control'a. Also a game - a mixture of genres. Traveling through the galaxy, battles, landing on planets, collecting minerals, promoting the plot ... But in the current time I did not meet her, and when I found out, I already somehow had no desire to play - the graphics and interface were repulsed. And this is still the late EGA version, but there was also CGA's.

Tetris

Original Tetris Pajitnova translated into English. He worked in text mode, because the palette was with more colors than graphic allowed. I can’t say that I played in this particular version, but I definitely played in some kind of “text” clone.

1987

Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel

Again Sierra - now a quest about police officers. An attempt was made to approach police procedures - it was impossible to just shoot a pistol. It ended with a shot in his leg. It was necessary for separate teams to get him out of his holster and take aim. In general, it seemed funny, but boring. Therefore, the game did not reach the popularity of Space Quest among me, and I did not pay attention to the following parts.

Saboteur II: Avenging Angel

And this is one of the few games that I remember from the Spectrum, I saw in the game club, then I tried to find it. But the first part on the PC was not, but there was a second. The graphics were weird - for the PC, but the game was addictive. Free running around the level, picking up weapons from boxes, and indeed the game for the ninja. Compared to linear arcades, it seemed something special.

Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge

The second part of the adventures of Roger Wilco. He was promoted to the chief janitor, but for a long time it was not possible to enjoy the well-deserved honors - the main villain returned from the first part and began to take revenge. There were no changes in the gameplay, it was played as the first part. With dictionary.

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards

And in the same year, the first Larry appeared - a variation on the Infocom text quest "Softporn Adventure", now with modern graphics. At the current time, I don’t remember something, really. Perhaps they were hiding from children. Therefore, the VGA version passed later. The second and third were not redone in VGA, the fourth was allegedly lost, and the fifth was already initially made in VGA.

Elite

There is the Elite, which is better known from the Spectrum. Did not play. Never. But it is necessary to mention.

1988

4x4 Off-Road Racing

Racing in jeeps, in general, is nothing special, but I remember them only because I played in them on some of the Soviet clones of the RS, some kind of “electronics”. I met with a matchmaker there. And for a long time I tried to find this game, in the end I found it. In the screenshot, crossing the river, by the way. Unsuccessful, a pebble lay in front of comfortable rivers and it was possible to do a backflip with acceleration without braking.

Abrams battle tank

“The Soviets attacked our convoy. It makes me crazy. You know what to do, soldier. ”

Tank simulator of the late eighties. It seemed that the Cold War was already all, but still it was necessary to fight with the Soviet troops. Although it didn’t bother us much. Tank, rides, shoots. And who he shoots at is the last question that worries the children. All the same, the only alternative was Battle City. Although not, it wasn’t yet - the dandy procession across the country began a few years later.

Airborne ranger

Also a game about the superiority of the US army over everyone else. A team of a ranger and three bags of ammunition is thrown behind enemy lines - and you need to get to the end of the level and do a dirty trick. Before starting, you could choose the contents of the bags yourself, then controlling the airplane, bags and the ranger were thrown on the map of the area, and then you had to go and kill everyone in a top view.

Empire: Wargame of the Century

A loud name hides a simple, in principle, turn-based strategy. There are 2-3 players on the map, some neutral cities. Cities can build troops. There are no resources, only time (infantry - 6 moves, battleship - 30 moves). You take over cities, develop an army - take over the world. One of the first strategies I saw. And the first one to play in Hot Seat mode. True, not a single round to the end did not finish.

Star Goose!

Vertical scroller. The goal is to collect six crystals at each level. The levels are looped, because if some crystal is missed, then later it will be possible to return to it. Of weapons - a machine gun and missiles, cartridges and lives are replenished in special tunnels, missiles - at the "bases". The levels are not very long, and the mechanics are rustic, there are few enemies. But at one time, the game clung to a pretty pretty picture.

Grand prix circuit

And of these races, first of all, the melody from the screen saver is remembered. Yes, and the race itself, although it was pretty standard, was delayed. Three cars, eight tracks. No others were remembered, at least.

King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella

In general, I was a little fan of the King Quest series - I liked Space Quest more, but the fourth part was remembered. First of all, new graphics and a new engine where you could control the mouse. It was also one of the first games with sound card support, but in those days the words didn’t. Squeaked by the speaker - and okay.

Tower topler

An incomprehensible creature is trying to climb to the top of the tower. The creature does not know how to jump, yet it knows how to - on the move, but it knows how to shoot with some kind of ball. Enemies, for the most part, are also balls of various kinds. The idea is simple, but interesting performance - when instead of moving the character to the left and right, the tower spins. Created some illusion of three-dimensionality.

The following parts will go on one issue per year. Or maybe even two issues for one year - 1989-1994 were very fishy years for dos games, there a lot of things deserved attention. I am planning to finish 1995 or 1996. Well, maybe 1997 will hook, we'll see. For by that time the era of games under Windows had already begun, and my laptop with those games could no longer cope.

From the items listed in the personal gold fund:

Saboteur II: Avenging Angel - you still need to go through, then you can cross out.

Livingstone supongo

Airborne ranger

Star Goose!

Grand prix circuit

On the laptop, everything (from the “Golden Fund”) starts up normally, except that I would slow down the ranger every two times. And the rest can be played without problems.
