Intel Xeon W Big Update

After a two-month break - the next update in the processor rows of Intel. The Xeon W family - server processors for workstations - almost tripled at one point. More precisely, in two points: a little earlier the new Xeon W-3000 line appeared in catalogs, and now we are meeting Cascade Lake representatives in the W-2000 line .



Despite the similarity of the indices, the two subgroups of the Xeon W family are very different, primarily in terms of usage patterns. Processors Intel Xeon W-2200 are made in the same socket as Core X, they have the same operating frequencies and TDP, as well as the same number of cores and memory channels. Differences from Core X: support for ECC memory, large amounts of memory, vPro, VROC and some other technologies - a clear nod towards the corporate segment. Actually, the line is positioned as HEDT for official needs, however, the similarity here ends with the characteristics: the chipset for Xeon W is used by the server, and there is no compatibility on motherboards.

When studying the table, it is immediately evident that, compared to the W-2100, new processors are almost 50% cheaper - I think it makes no sense to explain what the reason is.



As for the W-3200 processors, they are made in the Xeon Scalable socket - LGA3647, support a larger number of memory channels (6) and PCI Express lines (64). The number of cores and threads compared to the corresponding W-2200 model is doubled, the cache is increased by about the same amount. The rest of the functionality in the younger and older line is similar.

But the price of the latter, as we see, was not revised.
