Wooden Toys, Part Six - 1992

Games begin to become less and less wooden, in some cases, pre-installation begins to appear - an emphasis on graphics and simplification of the game process compared to previous games of this genre. In minimum requirements appears "4MB RAM". But I don’t know much about all this - RS is still occasionally in the Yamaha school. Therefore, almost all of the games listed were made up later.

Wooden Toys, Part Five - 1991

Wooden Toys, Part Four - 1990

Wooden Toys, Part Three - 1989

Wooden toys, part two - 1986-1988

Wooden toys, part one - 1982-1985

Alone in the dark

Three-dimensional walker about a haunted house. It doesn’t look very good by today's times, but, one might say, the founder of the survival horror genre. Of the serious flaws, it’s only a fixed camera and a leisurely hero, because of the inhibition of which another zombie has eaten more than once.

Bumpy's arcade fantasy

Puzzle platformer. Gingerbread man jumps on platforms, collecting bonuses. Platforms disappear, turn over, etc. The mechanics are primitive, but addictive.

Comanche: Maximum Overkill

The same casual flight simulator that wanted 4 megabytes of memory. Well, at least in the minimum requirements of 386, it worked much better on 486. It is alleged that the first game with a voxel landscape. Against the backdrop of all sorts of LHX and other retailers, such graphics looked very advantageous. A simple gameplay without simulation troubles greatly reduced the threshold for entry. No need to take off, no need to sit down, no need to think hard about hit points - just urine them all.

Dune

The first and second Dunes are associated only by the publisher. The developer and genre in each case were different. Moreover, the first was much less common. But still, the game was good, although I did not master it. At some point, it was necessary to go into the desert and sit there until the blue eyes - nothing came of it, he was dying of thirst. Genre - a mix of quest and strategy. And pokatushek on the worm.

Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (Dune II: Battle for Arrakis)

But this game is much more famous and is considered the founder of the RTS genre. Well, or one of the founders, at least. Almost everything that was in Dune2 was also used in the following games of this genre - building a base, building units, upgrades by building auxiliary buildings ... Except that there was no possibility to highlight the units with a frame - this appeared later. And in Dune2, you had to either build chains of units, or steer everyone individually.

Gobliins 2: The Prince Buffoon

Goblins, the second part, is in the Russian translation, where the goblins were called MVK and SAE. This is how the translators perpetuated themselves in the game. The sentence “if there are questions about the game looked especially nice in the readme, then call XX-XX-XX (MVK) or UU-UU-UU (SAE)”. The main difficulty of the game was that many actions required the use of both heroes almost simultaneously, and even in several steps, quickly switching between both.

Color lines

Eternal office toy. We still have some computers at work. Windows already, really. And I saw in one place a game on a black and white monitor. The people there very well distinguished shades of gray.

Rampart

It’s difficult to name the genre here. Arcade, probably divided into rounds. First you build a castle, enclosing the territory with tetris figures, then you put guns - if there is a place for them, then you fight back from the attack. Repeat until the end of the level. But they did not play the single much, they usually preferred the two against each other. It was possible and three, two on the keyboard, the third on the mouse.

Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender

How could you get past a game with that name? A quest in the style of Space Quest, the plot is a variation on the theme of the Polish film “Sexmission” - the hero finds himself on a planet where only women remained after the war.

Secret agent

Arcade, a clear relative of Crystal Caves. But I liked it more.

Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters

And here is the very Star Control II, one of the best games of all time. From the first part I took only space battles, throwing out the strategic part and turning into an arcade quest to save the galaxy. The plot, heroes, fights, music. Music is generally a different story. In my opinion, this is one of the games that did not gain anything from installing a sound card - the music implementation on PC Speaker was so good.

The incredible machine

Goldberg Machine Building Game. Who does not know what it is - remember the cartoon about the cat Leopold, in which the mice, using a cunning design, tried to drop a watermelon on his head. Here it is. It won’t reach the watermelons here, true, but all the same, the constructions get confused. The first game of the series, but far from the last.

Ugh!

A simulator of an air taxi from the Stone Age. The action takes place on one screen, it is necessary to carry people from one point to another.

Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss

By and large, the Ultima series passed me by. The only thing I played was Underworld. But she was very different from the usual game in the series - a three-dimensional dungeon, a lone hero. Then later they got used to it according to the Elder Scrolls series. And then everything was new. I don’t remember, however, that the game could be completed - but it was interesting to play.

Wolfenstein 3D

FPS I generally did not like much. Wolf is definitely not one of those. I didn’t even go through it - not least because of the fact that at that moment when I met him, Doom already existed. But the game is a serious milestone in the development of the genre, so I can not mention. Well and still played, albeit a little.

Branch

In those days, a small stratum of Russian games already began to exist, which were played precisely because they were Russian. Vetka is a clear clone of the Pipe Mania from the eighties. But no one played around Pipe Mania, and Vetka competed with Lines in terms of prevalence - and was not even forbidden at school.

Despite a lot of good games this year, only Star Control II gets into the “gold fund”. It starts normally on the laptop, but I still prefer to play a remake on a modern computer. Although some will still need to be completed or rebuilt, such as the same Dune.
