They say Samara is a city of Javists, but we are driving a PHP mitap there

Samara is a city of space, old merchant houses, 404fest, Volga shores, scientific research and the Wings of the Soviets football club ...

On September 28th Panda PHP Meetup will be added to this magnificence: speakers from Moscow, Saratov, Bryansk - and I will come to it. And since “we are not local ourselves,” we decided to find out more about the city: we interviewed our head of commercial products and part-time native of these places Denis Pushkin, talked with the guys who make the Samara IT podcast, rule the local companies and meetings, and we learned a lot of interesting.

We hope you complete this story in the comments.

Where they teach "IT specialist"

The most powerful universities, perhaps, are Samara University (combined aerospace (SSAU) and state (SamSU) universities) and the Samara Polytechnic.

The Polytech, apparently, really provides a good base: this year it took 14th place in the ranking of technical universities of the country

Among other things, they can study applied mathematics and computer science, ACS, applied mathematics and physics (if anything, about applied - this is not a repetition, but the name of specialties), information and computer security.

Denis says that Samara University has a well-known department of technical cybernetics, where they are engaged in image processing and recognition technologies - there they made computer vision projects for AvtoVAZ, Russian Railways and not only. Railroad workers, for example, were helped to recognize the marking of freight cars - what to say, accounting and reporting are all ours.

Samara University is perhaps one of the few places in the world where a rocket is not a symbol of launching a startup or career in IT, but just a rocket. Although you can start a career right from the walls of the university

IT companies are actively going to hunt directly to universities. For example, a training center at Samara University holds Netcracker - they teach Java, QA development for free and train business analysts there.

There are also internship programs - for example, the guys from Mercury Development have made a fun website and are recruiting people to study React and cross-platform mobile development in two to three months. All in an adult way, there are even interviews at the entrance.

Caution, on site with internships loud otherworldly sounds. And to move on it, you need to shoot a couple of asteroids

Previously, training centers at the largest Samara universities were kept at EPAM, but then something went wrong.

Usually, students begin to work as early as 3-4 courses. Someone gets a job through a teacher, someone - after courses or internships, someone himself. So practice and experience are added to a solid theoretical base - a trifle, but nice.

Where to work

Summarizing, we can distinguish several main types of employers.

Who is this city needed

Historically, the most popular specialization in the local market is Java, and a little less - C #. This demand was created by the education system and the largest employers who invest in training and hiring such specialists. Grown developers go out of the market - and Java "penetrates" other companies. However, it’s not a single Java: for example, Cloud Castle has a rather unusual stack by local standards - Ruby-on-Rails. There are also companies that support multicircuiting.

We believe that we will meet at the meeting and guys with cool skills in PHP / Symfony

Our Denis says that Samara companies have a very good culture of building processes - but from the point of view of product management, there is still room for growth. So the demand for products is noticeable. Victor Dyomin, CIO Wowworks, with whom we also spoke for this material, adds that analysts are also needed. For them, their own school even appeared. And the co-author of the local IT podcast, Dmitry Nikolaev, notes that there is a demand for front-end and QA engineers. In a word, (it seems) work is for everyone.

At the same time, the competition for developers in the local market is quite high, so salaries are gradually being pulled closer to Moscow, and companies are trying to keep people with interesting projects in their homes, fruits in the kitchen and bicycle parking in offices.

Good community ...

... And the reports are interesting (photo from one of the mini-conferences from the SITC association)

Dima Nikolaev - that same leading podcast and one of the creators of the Samara IT Community (SITC), - believes that in the Samara region there are about 10-12 thousand IT people. Moreover, in the VK group his community, which makes part of conferences, hackathons and meetings in the city, has about two thousand participants, and in the Telegram chat - about two hundred and fifty.

Another project of Dima and his colleagues is an irregular podcast in which children interview guests from various local and not only companies. The history of the project is an excellent illustration of the story about the power of crowdfunding: the community supports authors not only by listening, but also by money. So, with the help of listeners, the guys raised money for a high-quality microphone for recording podcasts and a microphone-button for events.

The podcast is available on Patreon, iTunes and VK. In the tenth anniversary episode , where there was already a normal microphone, our team leader Yura Yurin from Tambov even appeared - he told the guys about the correct udalenka

And recently, the guys began to actively develop YouTube - they launched the project “Confession of an IT specialist”: short stories of people from the community about themselves.

Of course, not only enthusiasts are active. Large companies undertake the organization of major events: 404fest, which was held for the ninth time, and 404 CAMP - a campground for IT professionals.

Brutal hare - a symbol of the festival

We really don’t know how it happened with a hare. Please tell us in the comments

Also, Panda Meetup regularly comes to Samara from neighboring Tolyatti, each time with a new theme - either Data Science, then C # .NET, then React and Angular. And here PHP will be delivered.

Of course, not only visiting guests make meetings: Java User Group and Kotlin User Group meet periodically in the city.

SITC guys keep a general calendar of events here

Where to live, work, relax

To rent a one-room apartment near the city center will cost 15-20 thousand rubles a month, a little further away - from 10. A two-room apartment will cost closer to 25, and very good - under 35. As far as we managed to find out, the proximity to the metro does not affect the rental price : in transport infrastructure it is not so important. But to ensure that nearby public transport runs nearby, or better, several routes intersect, it’s worth it.

Cyan offers hundreds of options for rental housing, but it’s better to search on public VKontakte - in trusted there will be a realtor ready to help

The Internet is often already connected to a rented apartment - sometimes the router is even configured, but more often the cable is simply forwarded. In large houses, you can usually choose from 2-3 operators, in smaller houses more often someone alone. In total there are about half a dozen, including Rostelecom, Beeline, MTS and several smaller operators. Who exactly gets caught depends not on the district, but on the particular house.

Tariffs Dom.ru; Dima Nikolaev enjoys and is satisfied

For work outside the office, mobile Internet may be enough - Beeline's unlimited will cost about 200 rubles. per month. There will also be no problems with wi-fi in the institutions: they say that many new cafes initially lay places for those who come to work, and provide outlets and access to the network. The “old” cafes also try to keep up. It is worth mentioning Cloud Café - it was opened by the guys from the web studio Cloud Castle. First discovered on the ground floor of a business center, but the idea was successful. Now the cafe is open to everyone, there they feed breakfast and dinner, and for employees there are still discounts.

Menu with crayons on the wall - a signature feature of the cafe that migrated with him from one room to another

The city will have a dozen and a half coworkings, including as many as eight pieces of the Anik coworking center. The Internet in them, they say, is decent, the atmosphere is working, so the remote workers are not offended.

YellowRockets is an important element of the startup infrastructure of the city, and they also have cool coworking with places for introverts

When you are planning to relax, in Samara there is where to walk and what to see. Pay attention to the Volga embankment - one of the longest river embankments in Russia, which has been thoroughly landscaped in recent years. Another record holder is Kuibyshev Square, which is recognized as the largest in Europe. In the city center, it is pleasant to walk along the pedestrian streets and admire examples of merchant architecture. From time immemorial, the city is multicultural and multiconfessional, so on a walk you will meet the Orthodox Church, the Old Believers, the Armenian, the Catholic Church, the Protestant Church, the synagogue, and the mosque.

The weather will no longer allow swimming, but, I hope, at least it’s possible to walk along the Volga)

Those who love technology rather than antiquity should go to the Samara Cosmic Museum. Opened to visit and built during the Second World War, Stalin's bunker.

They love space here, and the photograph museum looks interesting.

There are theaters in the city, and a circus, and a zoo, and a number of gardens and parks, and, of course, shopping centers with all the usual entertainment.

I really like space, I say: the Samara Arena stadium built for the World Cup is also known as the Cosmos Arena because of its shape

If you get tired of the city, go for a ride on the Volga on a pleasure boat (about 400 rubles for a one and a half hour walk) or engage in one of the many water sports. Very close to the city are the Samarskaya Luka National Park and the Zhigulevsky Reserve. And the locals are very advised to go to the so-called "helipad" - a square overlooking the Volga and the Zhiguli Mountains.

Samara onion

In general, see you in Samara in a week!

ps By the way, we are looking for a bar to sit near the venue of the meeting (coworking Futuroom, ul. Galaktionovskaya, 118A) - what do you recommend?

Many thanks for the help with the preparation of the article to Denis Pushkin, Viktor Demin, Dmitry Nikolaev and Katerina Romanenko.
