5G comes to us?

In early June 2019, an agreement on the development of 5G in the Russian Federation was signed in the Kremlin in a conspiratorial atmosphere.

The signed agreement was exchanged by the President of MTS PJSC Alexey Kornia and the current Chairman of the Board of Huawei Guo Ping. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The agreement provides for the introduction of 5G and IoT technologies and solutions on the existing MTS infrastructure, development of the operator’s commercial LTE network to the 5G-ready level, launch of test zones and 5G pilot networks for various usage scenarios.

SCRC meetings were held on June 5 and July 25, 2019, at which frequency bands were expanded and territories for the deployment of 5G pilot zones were determined. According to the decision of the State Committee for Emergency Situations of July 25, 2019, the results of scientific, research, experimental, experimental and design work must be submitted to the State Committee for Emergencies no later than September 2020

And on August 29, 2019, MTS issued 2 press releases on the launch of 5G pilot zones in Moscow and Kronstadt (St. Petersburg). According to the company, the 5G zone in Kronstadt covers the entire populated part of the island, and the commercial 5G smartphone showed a peak speed of 1.2 Gbit per second! In Moscow, the 5G test zone has been deployed at VDNH in the vicinity of the Smart City pavilion of the Moscow Department of Information Technology. In 2020, the 5G pilot zone will operate in most of the ENEA. It is planned that in the territory of this test zone MTS will open a 5G laboratory for startups.

Other operators also try to keep up. According to Beeline, the operator is actively upgrading the network in Moscow, and today 91% of the network in Moscow is 5G-ready. According to Megafon, 5G laboratory tests in the 26.7 GHz band showed the ability to provide mobile Internet connection speeds above 5 Gb / s!

At the moment (September 2019), the frequency bands 4800-4990 MHz and 25.25-29.5 GHz are allocated for the 5G pilot zones in the Russian Federation.

Earlier it was repeatedly reported that the most promising range for deploying 5G networks is the frequency range 3.4-3.8 GHz, but in the Russian Federation it is occupied by other services (including the military). Probably the struggle for this range is yet to come. In the meantime, according to the decision of July 25, 2019, the State Committee for Emergency Situations had to:

...eleven. To refuse to the public joint-stock company MegaFon (OGRN 1027809169585) in the allocation of the radio frequency band 3400-3800 MHz for the deployment of pilot zones of fifth-generation communication networks for the purpose of conducting scientific, research, experimental, experimental and design work in Moscow and St. Petersburg on the basis of negative conclusions about the possibility of allocating a radio frequency band.
