Winter came and the question arose of how to warm up. Coffee, tea or soup is what you need, and a thermos can help keep it hot. And I wouldn’t have been me if I hadn’t tested thermos flasks on the Russian market.
So this article was born. Which thermos to choose for car trips, take with you on a trip, go hunting, give a friend, an avid fisherman, and just buy a favorite, you can find out under the cut.

To begin with, what is a thermos and why is it needed? According to Wikipedia, Thermos is a type of household heat-insulating dishes for long-term preservation of a higher or lower temperature of food compared to the ambient temperature. Simply put, it is the dishes that will allow after a while on the way to drink hot or eat cold ice cream in the heat.
All this is made possible by good insulation of the internal vessel from the external environment. And if a rather thick cork prevents the exchange of temperature from above, what helps to keep the temperature in the vessel itself? Moreover, most modern thermoses have a stainless steel metal flask. It became interesting to me and I carefully cut the thermos on the machine.
As can be seen in the picture, the device of the thermos is as simple as possible: the external protective case holds approximately the center of the metal flask. There is air between the wall and the casing, but it is also pumped out in order to reduce heat transfer - a tube is visible at the bottom, which, after evacuating the air, is clamped and sealed. This is the simplest type of modern thermos.
FACT: Thermos allows you to save. For example, having boiled a kettle once and pouring one mug, you left the rest of the water to cool in the kettle. If this water is immediately poured into a thermos, then the next time you want to drink hot, you can use a thermos. Each additional inclusion of a kettle is heat released into the atmosphere, as well as money released into the air.
And how would I have been an engineer if I hadn’t first developed a testing methodology? For me, it was important how many degrees lost the liquid in a thermos for the past time. Therefore, the result of each test is the delta between the initial and final temperatures.
The first test emulated frequent use of a thermos: the temperature was measured immediately after pouring dishes with boiling water. The following measurements were carried out after 1, 3, 6, 10 hours. All data were recorded in a table that can be seen at the end of the material.
The second test simulates a situation when the thermos has to keep warm for a long time. Therefore, only three temperature measurements were made: at the time of boiling water, after 12 and after 24 hours. Thus, I obtained data on how generally a thermos can keep the temperature of a liquid per day.
All thermoses were tested under the same conditions at a temperature of about 0 degrees without wind.

What is nice, you can pour water without opening the thermos completely, but all thanks to special grooves on the sides of the cork. Opposite the slots are the arrows, so as not to spill liquid on the sides. During the day, in the second test, the thermos lost almost 60 degrees, that is, the water was slightly warm. In general, the choice is just for the price.

Let's start with an external examination: a rather interesting platform in which two handles are folded: this mechanism is somewhat reminiscent of Amet's thermos. On the opposite side there is a pair of plastic legs so that the thermos does not roll on a horizontal surface. Immediately draws attention to the presence of the handle on the lid-circle. The lid itself opens after turning to 45 degrees - it is much more convenient than doing a full turn. In addition to the circle goes a bowl. To pour the liquid just press the button, and you can close the valve by pressing the ring. The cork is very wide, since the neck is made almost the entire width of the flask. Tips for owners of thermoses:
1. In order for the thermos to keep its temperature longer, the flask must first be heated. That is, pour boiling water (it is possible and completely), let stand for a couple of minutes, and then pour the final boiling water. So you will not leave the precious heat to warm the flask.
2. Frequent opening of the plug results in faster cooling of the contents.
3. From a small mug you will drink a hot drink longer than from a large one.
4. A large throat of a thermos will allow you to take hot meals with you, like soup.
5. If the thermos is not planned to open often, then it can be insulated - this will prolong the cooling time of the contents.
It is rather curious to observe in the diagrams how the temperature of the liquid in the thermos decreases after a while. I enclose two graphs of temperature loss in tests. The first graph shows how the temperature decreased during measurements after 1, 3, 6 and 10 hours after pouring boiling water into thermoses.
The second graph also shows a decrease in temperature. At this time, measurements after pouring were carried out only twice: after 12 and 24 hours.
As a result of the tests, the Tiger MHK-A200 XC thermos won. It became interesting to me, which contributed to the victory and I decided to cut it. But the two-liter thermos saw was pitiful, so I found a liter counterpart and sawed along. And that's what was discovered:
There is a layer of copper foil between the body and the wall of the stainless steel flask. That is, in addition to vacuuming, as in other thermoses, Tiger added thermo-reflective foil to their thermoses. The idea worked!
It's time to sum up. To begin with, the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive thermos in our today's test is almost 1000%, that is, the range of prices on the market is very large. Also there is a great variation in the quality of these thermos flasks. And if the most affordable thermos for the day lost almost 60 degrees from the original temperature, then the best, but not the most expensive, a little more than 34 degrees. Agree, a noticeable difference. Therefore, it is better to rely on someone else's experience and avoid losing money.
Proceeding from my own experience, I would say that hot drinking significantly adds strength when working in the cold, so I am ready to invest in a good thermos. Ergonomics and design also play an important role, because it is more difficult to unscrew the cork with gloves, rather than just press a button and pour a glass of hot tea.
As for the top three winners, two out of three are two-liter models. And indeed, a liter thermos is enough for two for a good lunch. And if you want to drink several times or consumers more than two, then you need a larger thermos.
Do not save on yourself, choose the right thermos and insulate well. The winter is coming!

Tips for owners of thermoses:
1. In order for the thermos to keep its temperature longer, the flask must first be heated. That is, pour boiling water (it is possible and completely), let stand for a couple of minutes, and then pour the final boiling water. So you will not leave the precious heat to warm the flask.
2. Frequent opening of the plug results in faster cooling of the contents.
3. From a small mug you will drink a hot drink longer than from a large one.
4. A large throat of a thermos will allow you to take hot meals with you, like soup.
5. If the thermos is not planned to open often, then it can be insulated - this will prolong the cooling time of the contents.
Tables and graphs
It is rather curious to observe in the diagrams how the temperature of the liquid in the thermos decreases after a while. I enclose two graphs of temperature loss in tests. The first graph shows how the temperature decreased during measurements after 1, 3, 6 and 10 hours after pouring boiling water into thermoses.
The second graph also shows a decrease in temperature. At this time, measurements after pouring were carried out only twice: after 12 and 24 hours.
As a result of the tests, the Tiger MHK-A200 XC thermos won. It became interesting to me, which contributed to the victory and I decided to cut it. But the two-liter thermos saw was pitiful, so I found a liter counterpart and sawed along. And that's what was discovered:
There is a layer of copper foil between the body and the wall of the stainless steel flask. That is, in addition to vacuuming, as in other thermoses, Tiger added thermo-reflective foil to their thermoses. The idea worked!
Conclusion
It's time to sum up. To begin with, the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive thermos in our today's test is almost 1000%, that is, the range of prices on the market is very large. Also there is a great variation in the quality of these thermos flasks. And if the most affordable thermos for the day lost almost 60 degrees from the original temperature, then the best, but not the most expensive, a little more than 34 degrees. Agree, a noticeable difference. Therefore, it is better to rely on someone else's experience and avoid losing money.
Proceeding from my own experience, I would say that hot drinking significantly adds strength when working in the cold, so I am ready to invest in a good thermos. Ergonomics and design also play an important role, because it is more difficult to unscrew the cork with gloves, rather than just press a button and pour a glass of hot tea.
As for the top three winners, two out of three are two-liter models. And indeed, a liter thermos is enough for two for a good lunch. And if you want to drink several times or consumers more than two, then you need a larger thermos.
Do not save on yourself, choose the right thermos and insulate well. The winter is coming!
