Why iPhone 8 is better than iPhone X

This opinion is shared, in particular, by Steve Wozniak, the famous “father” of Apple and the tech geek who independently soldered the company's first computers.

It is noteworthy that usually Wozniak walks with several new smartphones at once, and is a big fan of the company's products, which he himself helped to create.



So the reviewers from The Verge edition ask : what if the iPhone 8 is actually an objectively better device? The dark horse, which everyone has forgotten because of the "boring" name. iPhone X, of course, looks much more attractive. But here are some questions ...



Design



iPhone 8 is very similar to last year's iPhone 7. Yes, there are changes, like a glass back, but for the average user they are almost invisible. But the iPhone X looks really innovative. This is the first Apple smartphone without the "Home" button. To wake up the screen, now you just need to click on it. Or - see! The face recognition system recognizes its owner, and unlocks the phone for it.













The space vacated by removing the Home button and the fingerprint scanner is given away under an extended screen. As a result, it occupies an unprecedented 83% of the front panel (instead of 66% from other iPhones). But the new design had several opponents. The most noticeable minus, which everyone points to, is the black protrusion on top of the display. It is needed for the Face ID face recognition system, the front camera and some sensors. He does not look too neat. However, this is subjective. But objectively, it is not very convenient to watch photos in full screen because of it. And also, the iPhone 8 comes in three colors - gray, silver and gold. iPhone X is presented only in two: gray and silver.

Performance



Outside, the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 look as different as possible, but inside, their hardware is almost the same. Both models are equipped with the most powerful Apple 11 "Bionic" processor. With six CPU cores, six GPU cores and a M11 motion analysis co-processor. According to the test results, this chip beats 2017 MacBook Pro notebook processors. And it is absolutely identical in two smartphones. The only difference in iron is the amount of RAM. The iPhone X runs 3 GB, and the iPhone 8 has 2 GB. The difference may seem significant, but here we must take into account that the iPhone 8 works at a lower resolution of the display and with a single-lens camera. In reality, the speed of the two iPhone is almost the same. While the iPhone 8 is one and a half times cheaper .









The characteristics of the cameras of the device are also quite comparable, and the cameras give a similar result (for the iPhone X, the camera will be slightly better if you need a portraits mode and an optical zoom). Also, both smartphones support fast charging - a new technology for Apple, which has long been the standard for many Android devices. iPhone 8, like the iPhone X, can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes.







Display



This is the most important and largest item. Literally. The iPhone X has the largest screen diagonal Apple smartphone ever released. As much as 5.8 inches, despite the fact that the weight and size of the case of the device is even less than that of the iPhone 8 Plus with a screen of 5.5 inches. For many, this becomes the deciding factor when making a purchase decision. See for yourself:









A plus! On the iPhone 8, the display occupies 65.6% of the frontal surface, and on the iPhone X - 82.9%. That is, there is almost one continuous display in front, due to the absence of the Home button and the reduction of black empty space above and below the screen.













It would seem that all. What is there to discuss, the screen at the "dozens" is objectively better. More pixels, friends! And 0.3 inches on the road is not lying! But not so simple. For example, Apple will not tell you that the display of the iPhone 8 Plus is actually significantly larger . And this is simple math. If you take a square and a rectangle with the same diagonals, the area of ​​the square will be much larger. Apple “pulled out” its new smartphone, so although X looks good on the specifications, the usable surface is larger than the iPhone 8 Plus. And even the iPhone 8 with its 4.7 inches is almost as good as the “top ten” - if you take into account the rounded corners and the black box at the top with sensors and a webcam. Now that the screens of smartphones are becoming more and more bizarre forms, it becomes simply incorrect to estimate their sizes along the length of the diagonals.







As a result, 8 Plus will show more useful content, even with its “modest” Full HD-resolution. It is wider, and therefore, even at the time of the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple introduced a new layout for placing applications on the screen in order to effectively use all the space. To simplify the design of programs, websites, games, etc. screens are distinguished not by resolutions, but by the number of “points”. So, 8 Plus has such horizontal points - 414. And the iPhone X has 375 (the same amount as an ordinary iPhone 8). Of course, X has more vertical points, but it’s not so easy to use them: part of the screen is occupied by the sidebar and the panel.













No one talks about this, but the fact is this: applications on X are shown almost the same as on the iPhone 8, and less free space is allocated for them than on the iPhone 8 Plus. Yes, you get more vertical space in portrait mode, but in landscape format the vertical space is actually even less than in the usual “eight” because developers have to bypass the ledge with the front camera and the “busy” bottom of the screen.







The unusual display format of the iPhone X is also a double-edged sword. On the one hand, X would be better for watching full-length movies. He is closer to the cinematic 21: 9. On the other hand, few people watch blockbusters on the bus. But YouTube and other traditional services are still shown in the 16: 9 format, which looks best on ordinary smartphones. Games and videos on the "top ten" can be "stretched", or you will have to watch the black bars on the sides. Relying on an upgrade of second-tier applications is also not necessary: ​​many of them have not yet adapted to the iPhone 6 Plus, although three years have passed.







And another factor, which is often not thought about, is repair. Such an unusual display, like the “dozens”, will cost a lot of money when replaced. Information has already come out that in the United States its replacement will cost $ 279! This is more than two screens from the iPhone 6 ($ 129) and 65% more expensive than the new screen to the iPhone 8 ($ 169). It is known that large displays break most often.









Face ID vs Touch ID



Face ID is another important feature for which they are buying a new phone. However, Touch ID, that is, unlocking with a fingerprint, which is present in older smartphones, still remains safer, even though Apple spoke differently at the presentation. The probability of an error with Face ID is much higher than many expect. In its new security guide, the company recognized the imperfections of this face biometric identification system. For example, the function is not suitable for children under the age of 13, as there is a risk of error in recognition. Well, if the user's face has been in a fire or has acquired a serious drawback - the new feature of the iPhone X is closed to him forever.







And everything would be fine, but Apple offers to choose. There is no Touch ID system in iPhone X; it can only be unlocked with a person or a password. If you are used to turning on a smartphone with one touch of a finger, there will be no such possibility on the “top ten”.







Fingerprint recognition works well in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The system was perfected in previous smartphones, there are almost no bugs, it is fast, reliable, and works without restrictions. There is no such novelty effect as in Face ID, but this is perhaps its only drawback.













Price



The iPhone 8 costs 56,990 rubles (~ $ 960), or $ 699 if ordered in the USA . The iPhone 8 Plus prices, of course, higher - 64 990 rubles ($ 1097) or $ 799, if you take in America . But "a dozen" beats all records. This is the most expensive iPhone in history. In Russia, Apple offers it for 79,990 rubles ($ 1,350!). In the US, it costs one and a half times cheaper , but also not weakly - $ 999. This is 40% more than the price of the iPhone 8.
