How to improve listening if you know 7000 words but don’t understand it by ear?

The best resources for devops, designers and more

This situation is quite common among programmers: the vocabulary is well developed, good writing and reading skills, and when it comes to understanding by ear, there is a tough “no” right away. So, the question is what to listen to, where to listen, how and why?

First of all, I would like to share professional resources so that you do not have to listen to the series “Friends” or “Harry Potter” that has gotten sore.

I will show you a list of textbooks with audio, video, workbooks and books for students, which you can study in technical English and step by step to improve your level of listening comprehension.

Nota Bene! Attention!

When working with manuals, try to get a complete set, not just a Coursebook / Student's book or CD. A complete kit usually includes several different components: Student's book or Coursebook with CD, Workbook with CD, Teacher's book, Apps or Online access, Video (DVD), etc. Progress in listening is achieved in the comprehensive development of the pages of the training manual and listening to the audio attached to the textbook, step by step, by performing all listening exercises. Once you have mastered one course, do not rush for a new one, continue to work on this CMD, but at a higher level. Many of them include levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 (Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate, Advanced)

For beginners:

All of these manuals are suitable for beginners, many of them have courses for continuing students (for example, this is a series starting with A1 and ending with B1, and some lead to C1-C2).

If you do all the exercises from Student's book energetically and with interest, do not forget about the Workbook, and all the applications that are included in the training course, you can develop your language gradually, competently and progressively, while correctly pronouncing the basic technical terms and you can understand them by ear. And most importantly, no Friends or Harry Potter.

Benefits for level B1 and above:

For B2 and higher:

Covered many benefits that she knew, but not all. Indeed, for level B2 and C1 there are a lot of resources: courses on Coursera, FutureLearn, edX on Internet of Things, Linux, Python, which is not there. It is much more difficult to get manuals and audio for Starters / Beginners / Elementary regarding technical English, which I think is not very true, because understanding and pronunciation should be laid right from the very beginning, and not just by the words “talking” - “walking”.

If you have any questions, write, leave your opinion in the comments.

Sincerely, Olga Berelkovskaya. :-)
