At that time I was a typical nerd teenager. In life, who did not lift anything heavier than the TSB volume. True books by that time I picked up read a lot. Including his first book on programming. I thought a lot, wrote several programs in a notebook.







But it didn’t make me a Terminator. And no wonder - the T-800 thought in assembly language.







A logical step on the path to physical perfection was a visit to the “rocking chair”. I made an arrangement with my classmate, a powerful guy with good training experience. By the age of 16, my coach will be the first adult in powerlifting (in the category of up to 90 kg).



Alas, my first visits to the hall turned into an epic fail, somewhat shocking my friend. I did not have the strength to squeeze an empty 20-pound neck from my chest, and there were simply no smaller sizes there. This is the end of the 80s and harsh basement rooms, and not the current glamorous fitness centers.



Horizontal bar, push ups



A horizontal bar was built from a piece of iron pipe at home. Daily repeated attempts to catch up (yes, at that time I couldn’t pull up even once). Plus several push-up approaches every day. Regularity gave a good effect: by the time I entered the university I was noticeably stronger. In particular, he improved his personal record in pull-ups from 0 to 15 and learned to do push-ups on one arm.



In addition, it was the beginning of a curious experiment: what if every morning for 30 years, push-ups and swing the press.

After a year of working with my own (small in those years) weight, I have grown enough to return to the coaching care of my classmate. He worked mainly with a barbell, on which the first pancakes had already pecked. Alas, this was a rather short period.

Passion for programming continues, I graduate from the CPC in the specialty of "computer operator".



I must say that at that time IT people were not quoted at all. Actually, there was no such thing. From our class, programmers wanted to become three or four people. The overwhelming majority was eager for the automotive profession - there you could get rights for free.

I work in a cooperative cafe as a dishwasher, waiter and cake seller. Work takes away all your free time - about 6 hours a day after school and 12 on weekends. If you manage to prepare for admission to the university during the sale of cakes, then there is no time or energy left for sports.



But I bought a computer - for 600 rubles I became the proud owner of the used BK-0010.01 (the new one cost 750). The car is a beast! 32 kB RAM, BASIC, Focal, tape recorder games. But this is a completely different story.



Weightlifting, Weight Lifting



In 1991 I entered the institute. The idea of ​​becoming more massive is still with me. The department of weightlifting was chosen for physical education. Thanks to this specialization, you can pump up for free in the institute gym. Free is important for the student.



And overall weightlifting is a good thing. It develops explosive strength and endurance, and at high levels it even brings a certain profit.

Our teacher monetized it like this - clung the badge of the master of sports and went to the pub.

In appearance, he is feeble and short, so the badge caused a certain skepticism among the regulars.

It was a bet on a box of beer - who would lift a heavier bar. The debaters went to the gym. Guys pushed (rather squeezed). Well, if the kilograms are 70-80. The master added a couple of pancakes and pushed the same bar with one hand.



I studied for four years. In general, it was already almost a sport - with regular training, weight classes and college competitions. The bottom line is the dry figure and the second category in kettlebell lifting.



Ectomorph problem in the middle lane

It’s like they wrote me from a young man. I performed in the category of up to 63 kg with a height of 185. Yes, before the competition I drove a little - but in the offseason, the weight was about 65. Moreover, I had a wild appetite and no restrictions on food. He devoured everything that came to hand. Once in a few hours of a picnic I persuaded about a kilogram of skewers of fatty pork. Considering everything else eaten during the day, it turned out about 5 thousand kcal. This is certainly not Phelps with his legendary 12,000 kcal daily diet . So, after all, my loads are not Olympic.

Judging by it, I was a fairly typical ectomorph. But in those days there was no Wikipedia, the normal weight was calculated by the formula "growth minus one hundred." So I wanted to gain at least 10 kg of high-quality mass.



However, working with 24 kg weights did not fully contribute to the goal. A lot of repetition, more relief and stamina. Yes, it was possible to perform with two poods. But 64 pounds with its own weight of 63 - it's pretty hard.



Tennis



How I got into tennis

Even at the beginning of our studies, a classmate and I found a free court and started playing tennis. Well, as in tennis - rather in its harsh Chelyabinsk variety. On the pavement, with no idea of ​​the right technique, with a rope instead of a net and with bald balls. Nevertheless, we rushed with great excitement for several hours in a row. Mostly in the scorching heat (in the evening the court was usually occupied by locals).



By the fourth year, a tennis section was organized at the institute. They called all more or less able to get on the ball. An opportunity to play not only in the summer! With a grid! Not on the pavement, on the boardwalk of the hall!

A little later it turned out that it was a double luck. At one of the kettlebell lifting workouts, I pulled my back hard. A few days went literally with the letter "G". Not in the sense of the trajectory of a chess knight - he simply could not straighten up.



A few days after I regained the ability to walk upright, there should have been another kettlebell lifting competition. I refused to participate in them, fearing for a not quite healed back. However, our severe weight lifter considered me a simulator. There was an expulsion from the section. If not for tennis, then there would be problems with the tests for physical education.



The institute tennis teacher himself was an amateur. I could not teach the great secrets of mastery. However, the regularity of classes, enthusiasm and a weak level of competition have borne fruit - I took second place in the competition among the universities of the city. The first was taken by the CCM accidentally hustling in there. Of course, he beat me easily. Defeat two sets. The final score of the finals is something like 6-2; 6-3. However, the coach even praised. For not losing dry.



After graduation, I played for several years. Even some time engaged with the coach. But the lack of the ability to regularly train and play gradually buried Nadal in me. I switched to badminton, but more on that later.



Sports "What? Where? When? ”,“ Brain Ring ”,“ Own Game ”



Like many representatives of the “most reading country in the world”, since childhood I respected the ChGK. But it always seemed to me that this is a game exclusively of celestials in tuxedos.



However, in the early 90s it became clear that in our city there is a sport variety of it - massive, with training and competition.



I got the idea to play. He assembled a team of classmates, primates, creatively called it "Primates" - and we played. A good team turned out, still playing.



ChGK is a good thing for socialization. Introverts with communication problems are especially useful (among programmers, they seem to be). Here I found my beloved wife, with whom I have been living for almost 20 years. True fitness effect of intellectual games is rather weak.



Powerlifting



Professional work with software and amateur with iron
Immediately after graduation, I got a job as a C ++ programmer. Not that in 1996 in our city there were many vacancies, but I was lucky. I went through an interview and was accepted into one of the first commercial companies headquartered in the USA. Right from the start I was offered $ 100 a month! This may not be impressive for modern IT people, but then our average salary in the country was about $ 60. Yes, and programmers were considered by few as necessary technical personnel. Like locksmiths, only less useful.



The second luck was a gym two blocks from the place of work. Flexible schedule was not yet decided to pamper. But an hour of dinner was laid, and it was possible to agree to increase it somewhat. In the evenings it was also possible to train, only the hall was full.



For training, I applied all the consistency and power of the person brought up by Primat. Available literature on training and nutrition has been carefully designed. Moreover, the salary has sharply increased the range of availability of books - compared with the years on scholarships.

Gamification elements were also applied. I kept a training diary and built graphs of the results in basic exercises on it. By a complex formula that takes into account the number of approaches, weight and number of repetitions.



In 2002, my daughter was born and I left to work at home. By this time, I was already fulfilling the standards of the second category in powerlifting. In the category up to 75 kg. Not the Hulk, of course. But considering that 10 years before that, I was in the category of 63 and always was an adversary not only of pharmacies - but even of sports supplements ...



The goal set during the years of video salons was considered achieved. Since then, he returned to the bar only occasionally. Iron is boring for my taste, nevertheless - even with gamification.



Badminton



I am ashamed to admit, but I mostly freelanced in PHP - either I could not search, or there weren’t any other offers. In the end, I wanted something more serious. I retrained to .Net and returned to full-time. The question arose about some interesting and regular physical activity. Homework does not contribute to regular classes in the gym and cool form.



About 2-3 years I managed office ping-pong and all the same home push-ups. Sometimes pull-ups and tennis were added. The competitive ChGK was responsible for the competitive moments - they give diplomas and medals there.



However, in all of this, integrity, regularity, and a feeling of sufficient load were not felt. I remembered that as a child I went to the badminton section for several months and decided to shake the old days. I first went to the badminton court about 12 years ago and still try to play. Here I found everything that I wanted from an ideal sport: an interesting game, solid physical activity, huge opportunities for improvement, the opportunity to participate in amateur veteran tournaments.



About the load
An important point. Although badminton has a reputation for recreational sports, this only applies to the “beach” shuttlecock of the shuttlecock. Due to the low threshold of entry into the game at a basic level, there is even something like the Dunning-Krueger effect. As one of my colleagues (who had never been on the court) said:



-I think I'm playing badminton perfectly!

At the same time, it is unlikely that someone who did not have experience in playing on the site will leave the top ten even against a weak amateur with experience.



Even at the amateur level, the load in badminton is solid. Our usual practice when playing in a pair is two hours of movement at an average heart rate of about 150. At the same time, during active draws of a heart rate of 180. A lone player against a serious opponent from time to time drives the pulse to the maximum zone . However, I am not abusing the latter now. Still, he is no longer a 35-year-old boy - why this extreme?

Chess



Perhaps badminton would remain my last major hobby (apart from work). But man assumes, and fate disposes.



How to get into chess through the bed
Three years ago, severe pneumonia crippled me. A week in intensive care, a constant temperature of 40, attempts to treat with increasingly severe antibiotics. As a result, we groped some set of drugs, which nevertheless gave an effect. But for another month I was kept in the hospital on droppers (having pretty tarnished the liver at the same time). It is clear that my leisure time was fairly limited during this period. Books and chess - that's all fun with bed rest.



As for chess: like almost every Soviet boy from an intelligent family, I had a basic idea of ​​them. But never engaged. Occasional games with his father, random amateur rivals and a computer at low levels.



And suddenly a lot of free time was formed. I took this opportunity to read a textbook on tactics and Nimtsovich’s “My System”. Lightly fixed in practice. In the fight against the phone and roommates.



After discharge, I was fortunate enough to get a job in a company where there were quite a few enthusiastic enthusiasts. We held several domestic tournaments. What else raised the chess level of each other.



Today I play chess.com with a rating of up to 1750 at its peak. Not Carlsen’s level, of course - but better than the previous 1450.



But physical activity in chess is not higher than chess. There is another drawback: a radical change in activity is considered the best rest. Chess, for my taste, is too close to programming. We must think, carefully analyze, study the literature. In general, you come home, and there are machine tools, machine tools ...



Badminton: Reboot



Pneumonia knocked me out of badminton for a long time. In general, maintaining good shape after a certain level (and age) turns into a typical Red Queen's race

It concerns both physical form and programmer skills. While I was lying, I did not run. Rather, by profession, I read something, but OFP ...



For some time after discharge, even a short walk at a snail's pace led to an increase in heart rate in 120. Only after a year did I return to light training.



About competitions
Since then I have not participated in competitions at all. The health benefits of the competition are generally dubious. As I already mentioned, in lonely against a strong opponent heart rate goes to sky-high heights. But the thing is gambling. In veteran tournaments, there is even a category 75+ . That is, with the proper level of dedication, you can do this all your life.


Be that as it may, training has resumed. But then the scourge of many veterans overtook me - my knees fell ill. No wonder, of course - during the lying out of the sides a few extra pounds were gained (partly due to medical indications, partly from immobility). And every extra kilogram of weight is 4 kilograms of load on the knees.



Badminton players are fed, so I decided to take a break for the summer. Give your knees a rest and lose a few pounds. The question arises - how to lose weight without loading the knees?

About ten years ago I happened to work in a large outsourcing company.

As you know, in outsourcing, cookies, corporate parties and other trinkets are actively practiced.

At some point, the XBox also appeared in the office. Out of interest, I boxed at Kinect Sports - I liked it.

But still, work is usually not up to games. So this remained a one-time, albeit curious experience.



And now there was a need to provide some interesting workload at home. I remembered the console experience and decided that this is a good option. Technology is taking leaps and bounds. Surely now there are a lot of outdoor games for consoles, including many virtual "spoons", right?

It turns out that after a loud hype, outdoor games for consoles began to wither.

The XBox Kinect project was completely turned off . Why so is a topic for a separate analysis. There are versions of miscalculations in Microsoft's marketing policy. Or maybe the majority of the player is too lazy and prefers not to get up from the couch.



For PlayStation still managed to find some interesting games.

Officially, the prefix was purchased on the occasion of the daughter's admission to the university. But we know to whom parents sometimes buy toys.

An obvious bias in boxing themes. There are two reasons for this:

There is even quite a serious study about what kind of fitness console games have on students. The work is five years ago, so the games I have reviewed did not get into it. Technology has stepped forward; in modern games, loads are higher. Of course, a lot depends on the dope of the one who plays. But subjectively, Kinect Boxing seemed lighter than the same BoxVR.

But it is very likely that this is due to the entry threshold that must be overcome. The same goes for load. For me it is lower than in boxing games. But I have not yet become so accustomed to drive there at a decent level.

The prefix cannot yet serve as a full-fledged replacement for sports, but it adds a certain amount of variety.



The potential prospects are very great. As technology advances, unique sports may appear.



On the other hand, the development of this direction is much more modest than expected.
