Indian onion - application in folk medicine

Indian onions, or small cakes, or ornithogalum, or tailed hen birds have long been known and popular among lovers of medicinal indoor plants. In appearance, the plant is not very beautiful, very similar to onions, is a bulb protruding from the ground by large saggy leaves growing from it. Despite its name, Indian onions, in fact, have nothing to do with onions eaten. Moreover, it contains toxic substances, so it can be used only for the preparation of various tinctures and decoctions, while adhering to strict adherence to the recipe.





The official medicine has not yet used Indian onions. Its use as one of the traditional medicine is associated with the treatment of many diseases, including for the treatment of joints and the treatment of bruises. Juice or preparations made from Indian onions are for external use only.

The use of it by most traditional healers as an anesthetic in the treatment of joints and radiculitis leads to positive results. Preparations from it are successfully used in the treatment of injuries, burns, tumors, suppurations, as well as the removal of edema with insect bites. Many of the traditional healers consider Indian onions to be the best way to treat joints; tincture of it is prepared on vodka from fresh leaves. Finely chopped fresh leaves are placed in a jar and filled with vodka, after which the tincture is aged for about 10 days in a dark place, then filtered and stored in the refrigerator.









In traditional medicine, Indian onions are widely used to treat obsolete radiculitis. The use of plant leaves in this case is more effective than the use of tinctures. You just need to rub a sore spot with a sheet, and then wrap the sore spot with a woolen scarf. The active substances in the plant's juice are able to increase blood circulation in diseased tissues and relieve pain. It should be remembered that rubbing with juice should not exceed two minutes, in order to avoid getting a skin burn. Some healers use Indian onions to treat severe bruises. Recipes in this case include a combination of honey and plant juice. The composition of the grinding mixture includes a spoonful of honey, one egg and three crushed leaves of Indian onion. The resulting mixture is rubbed into the skin and a warming dressing is applied.





The use of leaf juice for rubbing in the occipital and temporal areas of the head leads to a decrease in headache. In acute respiratory infections, it is recommended to rub the juice into the nose and eyebrows.





As an anti-aging agent, Indian onion has been successfully used. Recipes for sluggish skin, for whitening, cleansing the skin of blackheads - these are all means that lead to an increase in the popularity of Indian onions among the people. Indian masks are widely used as hair masks. Tincture is prepared as follows: crushed leaves are poured with boiling water and infused for an hour in a thermos. Then two tablespoons of tincture are mixed with 100 milliliters of peach oil. The warm mixture must be rubbed into the scalp, then put on a rubber cap and wrap your head for an hour.





It’s not in vain that the people call the “burning doctor” Indian onion, its use as a healing folk remedy requires great care. Juice or preparations made from it can cause an allergic reaction. Therefore, during the first use, you should perform a test on Indian onions. Be careful, never use Indian onions to treat children.
