Before heading into development, small-town politics, and other no less interesting activities, I was engaged in web marketing and SEO for some time. He was successful: he worked with major industry brands, and my personal promotional site regularly ranked first in the issuance of Yandex and Google for requests "online advertising" and "website promotion" (requests like "search promotion" in the early 00s have not yet enjoyed such popularity as now). And since there is only one first place in search results, you can safely consider the voiced below as an authoritative expert opinion.







SEO work is arguably the most creative of web jobs. That is, we can certainly say (and not without reason) that search engine promotion is a very simple thing, which invariably boils down to just a few basic body movements:



1. The formation of the semantic core.

2. Optimization of the site structure.

3. Content optimization.

4. Describe all this with the right external links from the right sources.



Voila!



However, to say this is the same as saying that “painting is a very simple task”. And in fact:



1. Take the canvas.

2. Take the paint.

3. Take the brush.

4. Draw a picture.



No problem. Now this picture can be safely carried to Christie's or Sotheby's - it, of course, will be gladly bought there.



For me personally, search engine promotion is like developing a relationship with a woman. As a way from the first contact, to bed and even sharing life. I’ll deploy now what I mean, and suddenly someone will come in handy.



Contact with a stranger





Let's imagine that we already have a semantic core for the site. Here, of course, there is also a certain number of nuances to which place and time could be dedicated, but in general, I think that for any more or less experienced seoshnik this aspect of promotion does not cause special questions.



You look at this core - and this is akin to the first acquaintance.



You take one request. Second. Third. See search results for these queries. Celebrate for yourself the main leaders and competitors. And while you just look closely. This will be a few queries. And, say, the first two or three dozen sites in the search engine. You are just looking at this stranger. Perhaps more shamelessly than is customary in human society. Well, it’s not a person, you can let anything you want with her. But you are not in a hurry, because now you are examining her contours and bends with your eyes to understand whether you need to invite her to a cafe or whether you should immediately take her home.



Acquaintance and easy chatter





You start a casual conversation with her about this and that, about the fifth or tenth. Perhaps she is even such a bad girl that she will begin to tell you about her former, and just good friends. But this is exactly what you need now. And so you begin to explore the sites that you noted for yourself in the previous paragraph, as the main leaders and competitors.



First, you simply flip through these sites. Take a quick look at the title, headings, internal link structure. Then, delve into the study of the three-five leaders. See their meta tags. Read the content. Learn how this content is structured in terms of html. See external links for what kind and where they lead from.



This step may take several days. But it's worth it - because it will save you a lot of time in the future due to the initial cutting off of dead-end branches of promotion.



You can not limit yourself to the top five, and explore each competitor as deeply as you see fit. And then…



And then, at some stage, a kind of BACH happens! All these pieces of the mosaic that you collected in the process of your acquaintance with the lady suddenly form a complete picture in your head, and now you know exactly what and how you should do next. This is like insight. And the stronger it is, the higher the likelihood that you will enter the Top 10 SERPs for some intelligible period of time.



And the next morning they woke up





Let's skip some intermediate steps, and imagine that you wake up with her in the morning in the same bed, and this situation more or less suits you.



So, several weeks (or months) have passed, you are now in the Top 10/30 for several basic requests. And some of your queries in 3-4 words are ranked first. Well, not bad already. And here, perhaps, the most interesting begins. Bo dragging a girl to bed is not difficult. It is much more difficult to build further relations with her in such a way as to live together happily ever after, and at the same time feel free and comfortable.



You must constantly warm up her interest in yourself. Then put a link to the site, here. Then invite to the club, then re-optimize meta tags. And each time you observe her reaction - the rating in the results has risen, or, conversely, has fallen. And if it fell, then why and how much. And is this your mistake, or is it the decisive and large-scale action of competitors who are also on the alert. And who also want to get into bed with your lady, and become the first in search results.



What is there to do? Family life is a permanent job. And above itself including, and over the project as a whole. When it comes to some really heavy search queries. When your competitors have budgets of several [tens] thousand cu per month - getting around them in extradition is a very difficult matter, even if you have been in this for a long time, and know it like the back of your hand.



Here, perhaps, lies the main catch of SEO, as a technology.



You see, when you are a good software developer, you are always guaranteed to get a known result within the framework of the technology used. Even if 10,000 Laravel developers make 10,000 different sites, why not? There will be just 10,000 different sites. And it is quite possible that they, with all their diversity, will be equally good. There is no problem.



However, if 10,000 SEO specialists, using a single technology, want to drag 10,000 sites with the same semantic core into the Top 10 of Google’s search results, then ten of them will succeed, while the rest of 9.990 will fail. Although all of them, at the same time, can be specialists at about the same level. Because:



Only 10 sites are placed in the Top 10 of the issue



This, perhaps, is the main difference between SEO and software development, as a type of professional activity.



SEO is in many ways an art, and it is in many ways a sport.



And since we are talking about the specifics of SEO, then there is a second key point that carries certain business risks. The fact is that even if you invited a stranger to a very expensive restaurant, it is not at all a fact that after dinner she will want to spend the night with you. Absolutely the same thing with search engines, where in addition to robots, the human factor also matters. I don’t know how now (I have not participated in commercial projects as SEO for a long time), but before, in the same Yandex, search moderators often banned websites with pleasure. Moreover, not necessarily for gross violations. It was possible to fly literally out of the blue. And it may not even be at the ban, but, for example, to lower the search results to some 50-100 places on requests from the entire kernel.



In other words, even if you run at this Olympiad faster than everyone else, this does not guarantee you any gold medals. This kind of work, nervous, frankly.
