I don’t smoke tobacco for 10 years or something like that, I won’t say for sure. And I smoked my first cigarette for a stretch of 7-8 years. So it’s possible to quit smoking, even with a very long experience (I confirm this to those who want, but doubt). But this is not about that now. It's about motivation.
I live for a very long time, there have been breaks in smoking to this day. Breaks of different durations, from several months to two years. But then the main motive was the fact that smoking prevented me from practicing active sports. You know, when you smoke like a steam locomotive, it’s almost impossible to give 100% to a training session - first the breathing system gives up, and then the muscular system, it’s difficult to fully load the muscles. And although I later invariably started smoking again (always under alcohol, for one pulls the other), these periods of life without cigarettes gave me an important experience:
- I noticed that when I go around without cigarettes for a long time - my ability to understand - significantly increases. Thinking becomes more voluminous, coherent and creative. And ultimately, this entails an increase in the speed of writing code.
And when, 10 years ago, I again decided to give up smoking, the main motive was a clean mind, according to subjective feelings, smoking not only pollutes the lungs, it also clouders the brain and affects overall performance. By the way, this observation observation came to me in the form of a kind of insight. I was even taken aback for a minute with myself, like:
- Daladna ?! Nothing ...
And then I decided to observe myself as an object, in order to track other possible patterns and connections between the work of the brain, consciousness and the state of the body as a whole. And here's what happened:
1. Well, about alcohol, heroin and other "heavy", legal and not very, I will not particularly paint - all people are adults, and so they understand what’s what.
By the way, since I always started smoking after drinking, I also had to close the topic with alcohol. Absolutely. Even beer and cocktails. I know from experience that I’m not the only one who is a “beginner to smoke drunk,” so I can recommend sobriety as an auxiliary method to life without cigarettes. There are, of course, certain victims in this approach. But profit is also present.
2. Sleep. Sleep is the most important factor in software development, which many underestimate because of the student’s habit of lack of sleep. Surrender and lack of sleep always go hand in hand, but this is a completely wrong approach. This is very simple to verify:
- Suppose you are writing some kind of complex project, which involves a plurality of options and approaches to solving the problem. And you do not know which side to take. Sit in front of the monitor for an hour, two, three - and nothing. Even more than that, you notice that you began to hang in chat rooms and kamentikas, to wander off work. Solution: go to bed! That's right immediately how they caught themselves on this. Get enough sleep, get up, drink tea or coffee, and the decision "by itself" comes to your mind.
This is the same “wiser morning of the evening,” which has been known for many centuries, but is constantly forgotten.
The physiological rationale here is very simple:
- During sleep, metabolites are removed from the brain and the conduction of neurons is restored.
- During sleep, the neural connections necessary to solve the problem are established.
Good sleep is a developer’s best friend.
For this we love him.
3. Mobility in the fresh air. There is also nothing to talk about. If you take walks in the fresh air an hour, two, three a day, your thinking becomes clearer and more creative. Here is a whole set of factors from normalization of oxidative processes to stimulation of the nervous system by the work of motor receptors. Details are in any textbook of psychophysiology.
4. Nutrition. I repeat, I have been living for a long time - there was time for experiments with diets of various kinds and kinds. Participated in religious posts. I tried vegetarianism. Raw food diet. Mono raw food diet. In the end, I settled on the fact that I eat everything I want, and that you can eat. But at the same time, personal experience tells me that a 30-50 percent diet consisting of fresh plant foods is some kind of optimum from which you should not deviate far and long. And the intestines work better as well. And this is another problem less, if anyone has one.
5. The position of the spine. There are only two points:
- Buy a good chair (well, and generally equip a comfortable workplace).
- Hang in the room a small horizontal bar for hanging.
By the way, with the horizontal bar is not so simple as it seems. This is not just a means to stretch the spine (although this is also). The fact is that Homo primates still have inherited chains in their nervous system that are responsible for moving around tree branches with the help of hands. Those of you who spend a lot of time or spent on the bar know for sure. And the stimulation of these chains, again, leads to a more complete functioning of the nervous system as a whole.
The purpose of this article is not so much to give the reader a set of recipes for maintaining health. All of what I wrote above is well known and generally available. The goal is to slightly shift the point of view in the perception of oneself. For I know from personal experience that purely because of our subjectivity and superstitions widespread in culture, we are often inclined to perceive our own thinking process and our consciousness as something unmistakable and independent of the external environment. But this is far from the case. And even very simple recipes for optimizing the environment and lifestyle, such as the above, can give a significant increase in productivity as a software developer.
Be healthy!
