Portrait of Data Scientist in Russia. Facts only

The hh.ru research service, together with the Mail.ru Big Data Academy MADE from Mail.ru, compiled a portrait of a Data Science specialist in Russia. After studying 8 thousand resumes of Russian data Scientists and 5.5 thousand vacancies of employers, we found out where the specialists in Data Science live and work, how old they are, what university they graduated from, what programming languages they speak and how many academic degrees they have.

Demand

Since 2015, the need for specialists is constantly growing. In 2018, the number of vacancies under the heading Data Scientist grew 7 times compared to 2015, and the vacancy with the keywords Machine Learning Specialist grew 5 times. At the same time, in the first half of 2019, the demand for Data Science specialists amounted to 65% of the demand for the entire 2018.

Demography

Mostly men work in the profession, their share among data Scientists is 81%. More than half of people looking for work in data analysis are specialists aged 25-34. There are still few women in the profession - 19%. But it is interesting that young girls are showing more and more interest in Data Science. Among women who posted a resume, almost 40% were girls aged 18-24.

But the resume of older applicants is quite small - only 3% of data scientists are over 45 years old. According to expert estimates, this may be due to several factors: firstly, there are few older representatives in Data Science, and secondly, job seekers with extensive experience are less likely to post their resumes on large search resources and more often find work on recommendations.
