Drones in the service of the forces of good

Drones can throw grenades, adjust artillery fire, fly with a chainsaw and fire with fire . Drones can save lives .

1. Anti-personnel mines

110 million anti-personnel mines are buried on Earth. Every day 10 civilians die, mostly women, children and old people. Using current technology, “demining” will take 1100 years.

Two brothers from Afghanistan developed a prototype of the Mine Kafon Drone , a sapper drone , which is intended to initiate a demining company of all minefields over the next 10 years. Drone sapper works 200 times cheaper and 20 times faster.

4,318 people contributed and collected € 177,456.

Drone systems operate in three basic modes, for each of which separate robotized modules are used.

The first module is a three-dimensional mapping and GPS system. With the module, the drone will fly around the terrain, compose its three-dimensional map and automatically arrange GPS tags for repeated flight.

After mapping, the device will return to the operator, who will replace the mapping module with a metal detector. With it, the hexacopter will fly around the area at a small height and place marks on the previously generated map in places where mines have been discovered.

The next step, the hexacopter, changes the metal detector to a manipulator, with the help of which it will place explosive devices the size of a tennis ball on the ground with the detected mines. After installing the explosives drone will fly off to a safe distance and activate the fuses.

India

A 14 year old boy from India suggested using a drone to find and disarm mines.

The drone is equipped with an infrared camera, an RGB sensor, a 21 megapixel camera and ... a 50-gram detonator to detonate the detected shells.

The tenth-grader learned that many sappers are dying, and ground-based robots during mine clearance also die and wanted to rectify the situation.

In the comments to the video they say that the drone is based on the Chinese tarot 650.

2. Assistance in extinguishing fires

Detection of hot spots of ignition / smoldering (smoldering hot spots) is difficult for the naked eye. Equipment DJI (components for the copter) and FLIR (heat chambers with different modes) come to the rescue .

Thermography also helps to find people in a burning building.

During forest fires with an extended front, drones provide key operational information.

3. Search and rescue

A pair of drones with a heat chamber replaces a company of soldiers, if a deputy gets lost in his country estate at night. But seriously, drones are indispensable for night searches or work in hard to reach places, such as floods. Many cases in which drones were very helpful in rescue operations: 59 lives .

4. Training pupils and students in programming and STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)

Flying robots are steeper than crawling, walking and riding robots. Children learn programming with interest when they see the result of their actions. There are several programs that simplify “entry into the profession of a programmer.”

Droneblocks

Applications for primary and secondary schools, we program in an intuitive interface, making up a program of “blocks”. DroneBlocks is free .

Dronepan

The program simplifies the creation of spherical panoramas, shot with the help of DJI's kopter ( Phantom 3 , Phantom 4 , Inspire 1 , Inspire 2 or Mavic Pro ). The process of creating a panorama takes two minutes.

Here are some impressive examples:

STI Olympiad in the " Unmanned Aviation Systems " profile

Particular attention is paid to the development and configuration of an intelligent digital environment for the organization of autonomous operation of a group of flying vehicles and the deployment of a local navigation system.

At the first qualifying stage, the participants will have to solve a number of problems in physics and computer science, which are the most important subjects for designing aircraft, in particular, for solving problems of designing control devices for robotic systems.

image

In the final stage, within the profile, the task of writing an automatic flight algorithm with the search for a specific point on the test site (to solve the problem of finding a fire in the sector) will be solved. At the disposal of the participants will be the designer, which is a micro UAV of the quadrocopter type, a ready stabilization system, a programmable microcontroller and a set of sensors. The winner will be the team that will be able to successfully control the device in automatic mode (according to the algorithm they have written), to search for a specific point on the ground and to stabilize the device as accurately as possible for a specified period of time over this point. To do this, it will be necessary not only to create a very accurate orientation algorithm taking into account the errors of real technology, but also to understand the dynamics of the flight of a real machine.

5. Delivery of blood and medicine to hard to reach places

2.9 million children under the age of 5 die a year. More than 150,000 pregnancy-related deaths can be prevented if donated blood is delivered on time.

Zipline startup has agreed with the government of Rwanda on the delivery of blood and medicine to hard-to-reach places.

6. More food at lower cost.

Agricultural drones ( DJI Agras MG-1 ) and special applications for farmers ( Raptor Maps ) appear that allow you to collect and analyze data about songs and thereby significantly increase productivity.

Drones provide real-time data and analysis about the state of crops, the presence of pests and other parameters of the state of agricultural land, saving time and money.

7. Airspace security

NASA and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) are developing Unmanned Traffic Management Systems to coordinate traffic in airspace. This system is designed to ensure the safety of small devices in automatic mode.

8. Drones of good

In 2017, the UAE Drones for Good competition was held in Dubai. 1000 contestants from 165 countries participated, who fought for the $ 1 million prize.

The Arab team with the project to rescue the drowning “Smart Ring” and the Nokia team with the ultra compact network project with drones for rescue operations won.
