Audi autonomous driving system - with Intel Inside

The autonomous control system of the new generation Audi A8, the sales of which will begin in 2018, is based on the decisions of Intel’s Programmable Solutions Group (PSG) and its subsidiary, Wind River. By graduation from the Society of Automotive Engineers (Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE), the system has 3 levels of automation. This means that the computer takes on the analysis of the external situation and the behavior of the machine, and also takes driving decisions itself, including in dynamic situations, expecting a person to participate only as a last resort.

The basis of the Intel Programmable Solutions Group is the Altera team, acquired by Intel at the end of 2015. PSG development implements such functionality as the integration of data on the surrounding terrain and cartographic information, parking, anti-emergency actions, functional safety of autonomous driving. The system of sensors and cameras, ensuring the interaction of the Audi A8 with the outside world, is shown in the KDPV.

Under the cut, you will find a table showing the gradations of car automation according to SAE. As we see, the process is going “according to plan” and has gone very far, so that there are fewer reasons to rely on its failure. Fully autonomous cars just around the corner.

Level Title Description Year
0 No automation All makes the driver. Acceleration, braking and steering is controlled only by a person, even if he is assisted by warning signals or security systems.
one Driver assistance Hands on the wheel. In most driving modes, the car is driven by a person, but it has automation systems. The computer never controls steering and acceleration / deceleration.
2 Partial Automation Hands are not on the steering wheel, but you need to look at the road. There are certain modes in which the car can drive the pedals and the steering wheel itself, but this happens only under certain conditions, and the driver must maintain full control over the vehicle. 2016
3 Conditional Automation Hands are not on the steering wheel, and you only need to look at the road occasionally. The car has certain modes in which it takes the whole process of driving, but the driver at any time can take control of the vehicle in his hands, acting as a “backup system”. 2019
four High automation Hands are not on the steering wheel, almost no need to look at the road. A car can be driven by a man, but it is not always necessary. An unmanned car can drive completely independently, it will simply turn to a person for help if it encounters something with which it cannot cope. 2022
five Full Automation Steering is optional. The front seats can turn in the opposite direction to make it easier for passengers to communicate with people sitting in the rear seats. No human intervention in the driving process is required at all. The car became fully autonomous 2025?
