Hollywood blames critics and Rotten Tomatoes for the unsuccessful launch of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Rescuers Malibu"

The film industry often presents surprises, both viewers and direct participants in this field. Sometimes films that no one takes seriously, bring tens and hundreds of millions of dollars with a budget of hundreds or even tens of thousands. But it also happens that the paintings, the budget of which is many dozens, if not hundreds, of millions of US dollars, fail at the box office and bring only huge losses instead of profits. Both in the first and in the second case, the filmmakers try to analyze the situation, trying to understand what caused the success or failure.



As for the next part of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and the updated "Malibu Rescuers", the results of the first days of hire were an unpleasant surprise for the keeper of the movie business. After both paintings received a box office below the expected, the leaders of these projects began to look for the guilty. There is nothing surprising. But for some reason they do not blame themselves, actors, screenwriters, advertisers who provided the promotion of films. No, these guys blame film critics and bloggers for their failure. Allegedly, potential viewers read unreasonably bad reviews on the web and do not go to the cinema, because of which the studio loses millions of dollars.



Basically, the charges relate to the site Rotten Tomatoes , on which "Pirates" received a rating of 32%, and "Rescuers" - 19%. Recently, a number of sources received information that people who are related to the filming of these films really blame Rotten Tomatoes for all their troubles. According to forecasts, the next part of Pirates of the Caribbean was supposed to collect $ 90- $ 100 million for four days off (holidays in the USA), and “Malibu Rescuers” - about $ 50 for five days. But these predictions did not come true. "Pirates" collected only $ 77 million, which is 34% less than the previous part of the franchise collected during the same period of time, and "Rescuers" - $ 23 million. These are fees in the United States and Canada.





By the way, Duane Johnson, who played one of the main roles in the “Rescuers”, also criticized the critics. He argues that the fans of the cinema genre really liked it, because the web hosts many positive reviews. But, as he believes, critics spoil everything.





Johnson is not so wrong about the sympathies of the audience. So, on the same Rotten Tomatoes rating of "Rescuers", compiled by ordinary users, reached 70%. This is a good result.



Other representatives of the world of cinema add fuel to the fire. So, Brett Rattner, who shot X-Men and Rush Hour, say that Rotten Tomatoes is “the worst thing in the movie industry.” He agrees with his colleagues regarding the ratings of critics on this site. About viewers who refuse to go to the show, he responds like this: "Oh, I see a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so I will not go to the film." Ratner believes that the rating of the film on this site is a synthetic indicator, about the mechanism of generation of which no one can say anything sensible. Therefore, you should not trust him.



Interestingly, the films received very good results at the preliminary screenings. Thus, the audience of the trial show of the new part of the Pirates gave an A- rating, which is higher than the previous part, On Stranger Shores, which B + received in due time. In general, Disney Company believed that to collect $ 800- $ 900 million for the entire rental period is quite a realistic goal. Of course, the producers planned to pay back the film (perhaps all is not lost).



As for “Rescuers”, this film also received high ratings from the audience at the preview. But after its release on the screens, the critique was lower than expected by 48%.



It is also necessary to say that the films themselves were intended for ordinary viewers, and not for professional critics. The calculation was on bright effects, charismatic characters and the overall picture. As a result, in Hollywood there were rumors that the management of a number of studios wanted to change the rules for forming the rating of critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It is either about the transfer of the press shows on the day of the release of the films or about their complete cancellation.



However, there are other opinions about why films showed worse results than planned. In the case of Pirates, a negative factor could be a change in viewers' attitudes toward Johnny Depp, who plays captain Jack Sparrow. Well, “Malibu's Rescuers”, the original version, rested mainly on the interest of male viewers to Pamela Anderson. The format of “Rescuers” was original at the time of its appearance. And now this is only a pale version of himself, and even with the male protagonist (that same Johnson).



However, Rattner says the ranking on Rotten Tomatoes is far from always correct. He recalls that he saw a lot of good films with a disgusting rating on Rotten Tomatoes.



Perhaps the low rating of both pictures played a role on Rotten Tomatoes, but this is clearly a minor factor. Authors of projects should look for other reasons, carefully analyzing all the components of their problem. In any case, it is impossible to call a failed start, but this is not what Hollywood counted on. On the other hand, since the major film industry players are so cautious about Rotten Tomatoes, it can be said that social media in our time is a much more significant influence factor than any other factors like traditional media.
