Loneliness online

What is the bulk of us workers in the IT sector, we mean by the word “connect”, or its Russian-language counterpart “connection”? The result, like the process itself, is the transfer of date packets between two computers through the network infrastructure. This is true, but let's take a look at the process of establishing a connection between at least two users from a more tangible point of view. The ultimate goal of digitizing, encoding, sending photons / electrons along kilometers of optical fiber and copper is trivial human communication.

Plunging headlong into the digital age, a modern worker, moving away from analog activities, is becoming increasingly attached to the IT industry, and often he becomes its integral part. Being in the positions of a programmer, system administrator and other members of the team of a modern IT office, having become, to some extent, the engine of the process of informatization of the whole society, we often remain on its sidelines. Having conscientiously worked out our plus / minus 8 hours of working hours at the computer, we “extinguish” our metal-plastic breadwinner with pleasure and ... And a stupor sets in. Having violated our usual forms of communication - live human communication, the digital era for IT workers themselves has become a Trojan horse in terms of social activity. Actually, this will be discussed further in the article.

What happened

For people over 25, this section will not say anything new. Oddly enough, but without a mobile phone with a bunch of messengers installed in it, from two or more social networks, not one hundred conditionally live contacts, the most ordinary person also had a bunch of points of social interaction. Moreover, the importance, as well as the number of friends, did not differ much from the modern list of friends on conditional Facebook, ranging from tens to thousands - among the most active characters. Moreover, having plowed his shift behind a machine tool, a culman, and an accounting statement, the worker of the analog era no longer needed his tool of production for further hanging out. By opening the phone book, or by trivially knocking on a door to a neighbor's door, a tired work man could easily organize live conversations on topics and interests distracted from his production activities.

What became

Of course, the skeptic will say - and now nothing will stop me from dialing my friend / girlfriend on my cell phone and going to the conditional theater for the “post modern”. However, how many of us will say that over the past year, two, five have regularly attended social events?

In the world when almost all information became available on the network, the formal purpose of visiting exhibitions, theaters, a concert of a favorite group, even banal movie theaters disappears.

Moreover, if we carefully pay attention to the circle of our “FBshnyh” friends, how many of them can we draw into the real world from online? Earlier, the circle of our communication was rather strictly limited by territorial principle, and strangely enough, magic — the closest friends turned out to be the most accessible physically. Now, having Skype, FaceTime, etc., and having “castrated” digital communication, close friends can be scattered all over the Globe.

Having stepped on the rails of progress and started up a bunch of accounts on forums and several social networks, finding all of our separated classmates, acquaintances on vacation in Thailand, colleagues from former work (who stayed in another city), few of us will name the people who live on the floor higher / lower in our apartment buildings.

Total network monetization

At the dawn of the massive introduction of the Internet into our lives, the possibilities of communication that it spawned seemed limitless. Indeed, without leaving the four walls, finding a community of people for the most sophisticated interests has become easier than ever. All kinds of forums, LJ, dating sites and so on. made it possible for everyone to communicate with everyone.

When Zuckerberg created his Facebook, his main goal was to create a convenient platform for dating and communication of a certain circle, students of his alma mater - Harvard. The name itself - the “book of persons”, in fact, copied the self-made “dating magazines” existing before that, moderated by a girl’s asset of the class / course, which were often found in different educational institutions not only in the West, but also in our wide open spaces. The first dating sites also became a breakthrough in building bridges between the lonely hearts of people who managed to subjugate IT progress. One of the first ICQ messengers (short for I seek you - I was primarily conceived as a network “chat” - a means to expand the circle of our communication. Having on board a sufficient set of filtering tools for accounts by gender, age, regional, language, each of us could find an interlocutor for every taste and color.

But what has it come down to? The Internet has bristled. Having realized what profits these Internet platforms can bring, serious people seriously took up them.

Information portals and forums, once bursting with visitors, have become rigidly transformed into a tool for promoting services / goods, having lost the interest of their regulars, a huge number of forums have just sunk into oblivion, I am sure each of us has a list of such “dead” sites. Dating sites, being at one time a half-closed community of the most advanced people, fell victim to a massive influx of motley audiences, up to representatives of the most ancient profession, with the obligatory pumping of material resources by the administration through a system of paid accounts, subscriptions, and promoting your profile. ICQ and Skype, being pioneers in their field, corny fell for a corporate client, on the one hand providing a unique opportunity to conduct business and establish office communication, the functionality of the program became increasingly unclaimed for personal, non-official use, which led to a massive outflow of people from them and the marginalization of these messengers. As for social networks, everything was not at all simple, its ordinary user from the hunter, famously plowing the digital spaces in search of people and events, was frankly a victim. Succumbing to a thorough analysis by advertisers, employers, law enforcement agencies, down to visa officers , it became simply dangerous for a simple user to conduct informal communication on these resources, because any careless statement, rash repost, can lead to serious consequences in real life, or you have to openly flawed fake accounts periodically blocked by the system.

At the forefront of progress

The current situation concerns one way or another all, but what is the special vulnerability of IT specialists here? Having conscientiously worked out our plus / minus 8 hours of working hours at the computer, we gladly extinguish our metal-plastic breadwinner and ... Turn it on again. Being part of IT progress, tying its social activity on the network, it completely swallowed us. At that time, when the conditional loader after the change can change the situation and enjoy spending time on his electronic device, sincerely having enjoyed watching the YouTube and FBS writing to unfamiliar people in obscene public places, relaxing in a soft chair, the IT worker will not be able to get out of it. Sitting at the monitor screen in his spare time from work for a person who just turned around, was engaged in the web, and not only design is fraught with physical and mental problems. This is akin to if every time a turner returned home for 3-4 hours, he would grind curly nuts on a workbench, and a cook at a home stove would make a Peking duck. It sounds like an absurdity, but for a huge number of IT workers it is a reality. Even with regard to the digital trail left in the history of the network, say, by the driver of a trolley bus, and here, the envy of an IT office employee will not appear on his career, and this gives many times more psychological freedom and the ability to let off steam on his network “avatar” ".

What to do?

If you are a cheerful IT specialist (s) with rich and colorful everyday life, then congratulations, you have found the answer to the question posed here and you can safely give your recommendations to less successful colleagues. There is apparently no one universal answer here, just as there are no unified people, so for each of us there may be a way to break the vicious circle of the network.

IT corporations such as Google, Apple, and others like them, have long been aware of the physical and mental problems that their employees face. As a result, from the beginning in the “West”, after which the notorious “cookies” were introduced everywhere in our IT offices - a flexible schedule, lounges for informal pastimes, meals, team building, organized hobby groups, where employees from different departments could get to know each other, thereby expanding the circle of their communication. However, in our conditions, most often of small offices, where everything is all in plain sight, these events do not solve the basic need of workers to change the situation and expand the circle of social contacts.

A clear distinction between working time and rest, social activity outside the network, and the acquisition of a range of interests not tied to fashionable gadgets can bring a new stream to our supersaturated figure. Only going beyond the boundaries of your usual social circle, minimizing your stay on-line, going beyond the boundaries of your routine comfort zone can betray brightness to our not always colorful everyday life.
