How can a programmer earn even more?

Based on the post “What should a programmer do to get normal money ...”, I want to share my thoughts on what a programmer should do to get good money.

So, you did not go to the state sector, avoid small studios oriented to the domestic market and work in a company with good prospects. How to increase your income?

It is generally accepted that revenue in IT depends on time and loyalty:

Income = Skills * Time * Loyalty
Intuitively it seems that you need to work well. Do not be late for the daily. Understand your part of the project. Set long-term goals. Overtime, if necessary. Do not conflict. Strive to become indispensable.

But over 12 years in IT, I have seen many examples of how this does not work . How technically strong guys earn less than the market. They are waiting for the next review, hoping that this time they will finally be appreciated.

But this does not happen. We have to save on muffins and blueberry smoothies again. And the purchase plan for the Tesla Model 3 is shifting again.

In fact, your income depends on other parameters:

Income = Skills * Spoken English * Understanding the business * Ability to negotiate
Spoken english

It’s hard for me to convey how important this skill is, regardless of the position in IT.

And it seems like everyone understands how important it is, but few people take it seriously. The key word is colloquial . If you cannot maintain a dialogue, consider that you do not have English.

To learn to speak English, you need to speak English. To be shy, blush, sweat, but talk. The development zone is located outside the comfort zone.

Business understanding

There is a huge difference between “just doing jigsaw pounding” and “understanding how the product makes money”. Product managers are not visionaries. A good proportion of the tasks that they set can be made easier, done later, or not done at all.

When you understand the business, you begin to add value not only to the code, but also to product solutions. And that means that your value is growing.

Conversation

Your income is someone else's expense. If you are not ready for negotiations, you are guaranteed to lose them. There are a lot of literature on this subject. From what I liked - Gavin Kennedy "You can agree on everything."

A simple example:

“I want a raise because ... two years have passed”, “... I am developing”, “... I plan to buy a car” - a weak negotiating position. “I have a $ 4k offer here” - strong.

It is enough to go through a couple of interviews a year to keep abreast of the market situation.

In real life you never get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate.

Why am I writing about this

I have worked in various leadership positions from PM in outsourcing to CTO in a grocery company and have seen many career stories from fast-moving to dead-end.
