According to some experts, the power of these CPUs is already beyond the “top desktop” class (HEDT, High-End Desktop). This is a higher class, which can be called “super-desktop desktop”. It is proposed to classify as SHED: Super High-End Desktop.
Until yesterday, it was only known that the Threadripper chips will consist of two Zeppelin crystals and are based on the latest core and Zen microarchitecture. Double crystals - this means that they must be twice as powerful as the Ryzen 7 processors introduced in February . There will be two times more: cores, threads, cache, etc. The assumptions turned out to be fair. In fact, Threadripper supports up to 16 cores, up to 32 MB L3 cache and four-channel memory.
For these CPUs, you will need to buy a new motherboard with a new connector - on a platform called X399. It uses a massive socket with an LGA matrix of 4094 pads.
The characteristics of the two new “super-high-end” processors, the Threadripper 1950X and Threadripper 1920X are shown in the table

In addition to the official announcement, AMD President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Lisa Su (Lisa Su) personally recorded a video in which she talks about innovations in the Threadripper. She also confirmed that the new CPUs will go on sale in August 2017.
The 1950X Threadripper is actually two Ryzen 7 1800X crystals “glued together” with each other. Which is typical, even at a cost, a “dual” processor corresponds to twice the price of a Ryzen 7 1800X ($ 499 × 2). In the same way, the heat emission from it is almost exactly twice as high (180 W vs. 95 W).
The first copies of X399 motherboards were presented at Computex in June. For example, in the photo - ASRock production board. On it there are types of connectors M.2, as well as connector U.2 for modern SSD-drives.
New processors may seem expensive compared to Ryzen. But if you compare them with the CPU of the same class of production of Intel, the difference is clearly in favor of AMD. For example, with an AMD processor
1950X Threadripper class can compare Intel Core i9-7980XE. They have a similar number of cores and threads (16/32 vs. 18/36), Core i9 base rate is unknown, L2 cache (512 KB for AMD against 1 MB for Intel), L3 cache (32 MB for AMD against 24.75 MB for Intel) and heat dissipation (180 W for AMD versus supposedly 165 W for Intel). Now compare the cost - $ 999 and $ 1999. Superfluous "unit", of course, the processor Intel.
The same comparison can be made between the AMD Threadripper 1920X and the Intel Core i9-7900X. Here, the AMD processor wins in general in all respects, except for the L2 cache. It has more cores (12 vs. 10) and higher base clock frequency (3.5 GHz versus 3.3 GHz), more L3 cache (32 MB against 11 MB), while it is $ 200 cheaper than $ 999 instead of $ 999.
AMD also released the benchmark results, where the Threadripper 1950X and Threadripper 1920X are compared to the Core i9-7900X, which has the same value as the Threadripper 1950X ($ 999). In these tests, both representatives of AMD significantly bypass the competitor: 3062 and 2431 points against 2167 for the Core i9-7900X.
If you are not ready to spend such money on a processor for a home computer, then you can look at the new four-core processors in the Ryzen 3 line, which the company also announced. These are the weakest processors among all desktop CPUs. It is known that these processors are made on the same crystals as the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7, but with some disabled / blocked functionality. Prices for them have not yet announced. They will probably be lower than $ 150.
Ryzen 3 1200 - 4 cores / 4 threads, base frequency 3.1 GHz, turbo 3.4 GHz, 8 MB of L3 cache.
The official presentation and start of sales of the Ryzen 3 1300X and Ryzen 3 1200 are scheduled for July 27, 2017, then everything will finally become clear.
