Why alcohol

pros

Isopropyl and ethanol are less volatile and toxic than acetone. Acetone evaporates more actively, smells stronger and is more dangerous for health. Any operations with acetone can be performed only in a well-ventilated area. Acetone is easier to ignite than alcohol solutions, and even its vapors are flammable.

Alcohols evaporate less and are less harmful by inhalation. In addition, the camera Polysher is equipped with good seals - in the process of working does not even smell alcohol. Polysher can be used in an office space or living room.

Polysher polishing products from Polysmooth gives a smoother surface than the treatment of conventional plastics with acetone. Processed products look better.

Minuses

Any treatment with a solvent, acetone or alcohol, changes the size of the product. Details polished in this way are difficult to apply in mechanisms where accuracy of parameters is important. But the technology is ideal for processing decorative products, as well as their prototypes for subsequent casting.

Kickstarter Campaign

Polymaker campaigned on a Kick starter in support of this project, and collected $ 433,860 from 1,343 people, after which he launched mass production and sale.

How it works

Polysher is an automated aerosol camera with a rotary table.

Included is a power adapter, with adapters for different types of sockets, a special pipette and two removable platforms.

Isopropyl or ethyl alcohol is poured into the apparatus.

The solvent is evaporated by ultrasound, creating a high concentration of alcohol in the volume of the chamber.

In the camera Polisher placed a printout that must be polished.

The protrusions are needed to ensure that the alcohol mist penetrates to the surfaces with which the model comes into contact with the platform.

The rotary switch is responsible for setting the processing time, and in the process of printing - for changing the color of the backlight.

The model slowly rotates on the turntable, reacting with the alcohol suspension and becoming smooth and shiny.

When processing is completed, the platform with the model rises from the camera.

You can replace the platform without touching the model itself, set the processed product aside to dry, and place the following on the second platform. For this purpose there are two platforms.

Questions and answers

From the official site

- PolySmooth is PLA, ABS or something new?

- This is not a PLA or ABS, this is a new material created for this project.

- Is the material toxic?

- As far as we know, toxicity is minimal, no more than PLA.

- Is the material biodegradable?

- The material has low biodegradability.

- Can I use gin as a polishing fluid?

- You can use ethyl or isopropyl alcohol with a concentration of 70%. Recommended 90-96%. Pure alcohol is more profitable than drinks.

- Can I process parts from PLA or ABS in Polysher?

- No, Polysher is intended only for use with PolySmooth. PLA and ABS should not be polished with alcohol.

- Is it dangerous to inhale the evaporation of alcohol?

- The device is sealed, alcohol during polishing is not released into the air.

- Can I let my children use it?

- If they follow the instructions, it is completely safe.

- Can I polish my PolySmooth prints manually, without Polysher, using a rag and alcohol?

- Theoretically - yes. It does not make sense, it will take too much effort and time, the result in Polysher is superior to manual polishing.

- Are PolySmooth prints safe for health?

- For most general purpose applications, the material is safe.

- Is it possible to print dishes, cooking utensils from PolySmooth?

- PolySmooth is not recommended for use with food.

How to print

PolySmooth print settings are the same as for PLA, polylactide. After printing, you must remove the support and process the printout in Polysher. Manual polishing is not needed.

We had transparent PolySmooth on the tests, the processed models became translucent - thin elements, such as ears, wings and tails on the dragon model, became transparent due to the saturation of the plastic with isopropyl alcohol.

Possible mistakes

Not removed remnants of support can partially dissolve, leaving bumps on the model.

Too thin elements of models can dissolve and fall off, like a dragon's tail.

How to create smooth models

The combination of Polysher and PolySmooth is a turnkey solution for creating perfectly smooth models with a glossy surface finish. The process does not require extra work and special skills. It can be used both by amateur makers and developers of souvenirs and toys, for example, to create master models for subsequent casting.
